Be careful while driving your car in Delhi, and make sure you carry the vehicle’s insurance papers all the time. Getting caught without them will now cost you Rs 1,000 and a visit to the court.
Joint commissioner (traffic) Satyendra Garg said the move was to ensure that accident victims get their due. ”We often find that victims of major accidents cannot file claims as they do not have the requisite papers. During the drive, we want to educate people on the importance of having their insurance papers in place,” said Garg. He said that though 5,000 such challans have been issued this year, this will be the first concentrated effort to issue penalize motorists for not carrying the papers.
”The challans will be sent to the court as the traffic police do not have power to collect such a fine directly,” said a senior traffic cop.
