New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): Neeraj Kumar will be the next Police Commissioner of Delhi. He will take over from B.K. Gupta on July 1.
Neeraj Kumar is a 1976-batch IPS officer. Before assuming his new responsibilities, Kumar was Director-General of Delhi Prisons.
Current Police Commissioner Gupta will superannuate on June 30.
The union home ministry had earlier issued an order directing Gupta to hand over charge.
Gupta is an AGMU-cadre IPS officer of the 1975 batch. He had taken charge from Y.S. Dadwal in November 2010 after the Commonwealth Games.
He has been Special Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), and was in charge of overall security arrangements for the Commonwealth Games.
He is the senior most officer of the Delhi Police.
The race for the top post was between Neeraj Kumar and Ajay Chadha. While Kumar was to retire in July 2013, Chadha was to demit office in August 2013. However, Kumar is a year senior to Chadha, and therefore was the preferred choice.
Chadha has already moved to an important assignment in the home ministry. Kumar had earlier refused a similar posting in the ministry.
Kumar is an alumni of St Stephen’s College. He has also had a long stint in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Chadha now heads the crucial internal security division in the ministry and directly reports to Home Minister P. Chidambaram. (ANI)
