Addressing a huge gathering of tribal women here during a conclave called ‘Tribal Women Empowerment’, Sonia Gandhi said that she was aware of the everyday problems faced by the tribal women.
“I know this very well that you have faced a lot of hardships in your life, you have seen very difficult times in your life. Also, you have gone through difficulties in your day-to-day activities,” she said.
Gandhi further assured that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre can root out the Maoist menace by undertaking various development projects in the tribal areas.
“I am well aware that in some states, where there is a thick tribal population, either there is left-wing extremism or insurgency. However, by implementing rural development programmes, such forces could be defeated,” she said.
For the past few years, the rebels have stepped up their attacks against the government, targeting and damaging democratic and civil institutions of the nation, such as schools, medical centres and government property.
Maoists have significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions in affected states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Orissa. (ANI)
