Amitabh Bachchan, the Shahenshah of Bollywood, is a living legend. He is, perhaps, the most influential and popular Indian cinema actor ever. Amitabh Bachchan has won three National Awards, 14 Filmfare awards and has acted in over 180 movies. He has had his stint with television and made Kaun Banega Crorepati a household show. Apart from acting, he even tried playback singing, film producing and even politics meeting partial success in all three. Big B, as the media calls him, has delivered the most number of top grossing hits at the box-office. It is difficult to choose ten of his finest films but nevertheless, here is a list of top 5 movies of Amitabh Bachchan.
Sholay was, undoubtedly, an epic film but Deewar is the film which elevated Amitabh Bachchan to the status of a megastar. If Zanjeer created his angry-young-man image then Deewar cemented it. Some of the finest dialogues in Bollywood are in this film and have been delivered in the baritone voice of Big B. The epic confrontation scene between Big B’s character Vijay and Shashi Kapoor’s character Ravi is perhaps the best ever in Indian cinema. “Mere pasa bangla hai, gaadi hai, paisa hai, tere pass kya hai?”, asks an arrogant Vijay to his brother Ravi, and back comes the legendary reply: “Mere pass maa hai”. Although Vijay has been shown on the wrong side of law, we sympathise the character. This the power of Big B’s acting.
2. Sholay (1975):</strong>
Sholay is a landmark film in Indian cinema. It was one of the first cult epics that Bollywood saw. And it was so famous that back then the movie would be run on AIR every evening, because of which a majority of the people of that generation were able to recite every dialogue from the movie by heart. Amitabh Bachchan played Jai – one-half of the conmen buddies Jai and Veeru – who won a lot of hearts by his calm and cool depiction of the character. No one else could have played Jai better.
3. Zanjeer (1973):</strong>
Big B plays Vijay, an honest police officer who is jailed on false charges and, after his release, plans to take revenge. This film gave birth to Amitabh Bachchan’s angry-young-man image. Zanjeer is considered Big B’s original debut film especially because all the superhits that he delivered solo were made after this.
<strong>4. Black (2005):</strong>
Ranked as one of the ten best movies of 2005 from across the globe by Time magazine (Europe), Black is the tale of a deaf and blind girl, played by Rani Mukherjee, and her teacher, played by Amitabh Bachchan. The film fetched Big B his second National Award for best actor. It is only the fifth film to have won in all the major categories of the Filmfare Award.
<strong>5. Don (1978):</strong>
Yes, Amitabh Bachchan was the original Don. This is the story of Don and Don’s look alike, Vijay, and how the fake takes over the role of the original helping the police bust his gang. The double role was superbly played by Amitabh Bachchan. As Don, he was formidable and as Vijay, the common guy, he gave us the unforgettable song: “Khayke paan banaras vala”.
